The Blackhawks announced this morning that they had extended 2013 3rd round draft pick and pending restricted free agent John Hayden for two more seasons. This comes on the heels of the signing of Henri Jokiharju on Tuesday, and Andreas Martinsen last week
The 23-year-old former Yale forward had a promising first full pro season this year. He had 13 points (4G, 9A) in 47 games for the Blackhawks while also splitting time in Rockford. During the regular season for the Icehogs, “Big John Studd” collected 17 points (5G, 12A) in just 24 games.
Following the regular season close with the Blackhawks, Hayden returned to Rockford to play a pivotal leadership role in the emotional Icehogs Calder Cup run while collecting three post season goals in 12 games.
The Blackhawks are counting on the 6’3″ 225 lbs wing to bring a much needed physical element to their team this coming season, along with Martinsen.
UPDATE – The terms of the contract are $1.5M total value, and $750K per season. This amount is down from $925K on his entry level contract. The Blackhawks traded dollars for 1-way status, which means Hayden will make $750K whether he plays in the NHL or AHL.
