BREAKING: Kraken trade Giordano and Blackwell to Maple Leafs

In another deal that will help shape the future of the Seattle Kraken, they made their second big deal of their first trade deadline, sending their captain to Toronto on Sunday. The deal is Mark Giordano and Colin Blackwell to the Maple Leafs for second-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023 and a third-round draft pick in 2024. Seattle also agreed to retain half of Giordano’s salary to help make the cap numbers work for Toronto.

Giordano was acquired from the Calgary Flames and Blackwell was acquired from the New York Rangers in the expansion draft. In what has been a rough season for the Kraken, the 38-year-old defenseman and former Norris Trophy winner put up 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) while playing quarterback on their power play and anchoring their first defensive pair. Giordano was rewarded for playing in his 1,000th NHL game on Wednesday.

Blackwell, who had a late start to his regular season beginning the year on the injured list, is set to turn 29 on March 28. When he finally made his debut, he quickly became a fan favorite, putting up 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 38 games.

The Kraken have acquired six future draft picks for three roster players within the last week. They are most definitely not done with deals before the deadline clock strikes zero at 12 p.m. PDT on Monday.
