Blackhawks NCAA Campus Report: Nov 17-18

It’s still relatively early in the season, but the Chicago Blackhawks could have another top scoring player in college hockey this year.  Last season, Northeastern forward Dylan Sikura lit up the NCAA playing on a line with Hobey Baker winner Adam Gaudette and Nolan Stevens.  But this year, Evan Barratt and the Penn State Nittany Lions are setting the league on fire.  They are scoring at will and look to be a serious national championship contender.

This is great news for Blackhawks fans.  If Barratt can provide some center depth in a couple years, he will bring a lot of value.  There aren’t a lot of guys willing to get to the net on the Hawks right now and that’s something new head coach Jeremy Colliton is stressing.  They need players who want to work to get to the dirty areas and get rewarded.  Barratt could be one of those players.

Let’s get right into what happened this weekend in college hockey for the Blackhawks prospects.

Last time we left off, we talked about how Evan Barratt was a nice player on a pretty good team.  But this week in Penn State’s series against the University of Michigan, Barratt turned into a star.  The Nittany lions split the series with the Wolverines, but again it was a high scoring bout.  Barratt added a goal and an assist in Friday’s game and had a hat-trick in Saturday’s game.

Penn State plays at Ohio State next weekend.

Ian Mitchell – Defenseman – University of Denver – 2G, 8A

Ian Mitchell and the Denver Pioneers had a difficult matchup this weekend when they hosted the No. 1 ranked Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.  The teams split the series, but it was one of the most exciting couple of games in college hockey.  The Pioneers won Friday’s game 2-0 with Mitchell scoring the first goal on the powerplay, followed by a late game empty net goal.

The Pioneers host Providence next weekend.

Chad Krys – Defenseman – Boston University – 2G, 5A

The Boston Terriers are slowly getting warmer after a slow start to the season.  Until Saturday night’s loss at home against Maine, Boston had won three games in a row.  Chad Krys and the veteran blue liners had some nice puck movement on this powerplay goal by Joel Farabee Friday night.

Boston plays UConn and Yale/Union next weekend.

Other Notables

Boston University’s Jake Wise assisted on David Farrance’s game-winning powerplay goal Friday night.
