Dylan Sikura continues to shine, helping Northeastern win their first Bean Pot since 1988
As the college hockey season wraps up, teams are ramping up their momentum heading into playoff time. One of the Blackhawks top prospects, Dylan Sikura, has been dominant all season and hasn’t slowed down. With two assists in the championship game of the Beat Pot in Boston last week, Sikura helped his Northeastern Huskies win the tournament for the first time since 1988. The tournament has been extremely competitive the last several years considering the top-end talent that plays college hockey in the Boston area.
As Blackhawks fans watch their team wither away this season, there will be a lot more attention drawn to the prospect pool and that starts with Sikura. Will he sign a John Hayden type deal or will he walk on the Blackhawks? We’re all hoping for the former but as his achievements continue to pile on this season, his decision is becoming less obvious.
This weekend has a great slate of college hockey games featured by a few special matchups featuring Blackhawks prospects. Starting in the Big Ten, Michigan visits Notre Dame in a series that should be entertaining. The Irish have been one of the best teams this year and probably the biggest surprise. This series will feature Blackhawks prospect Dennis Gilbert and potential 2018 1st round pick Quinn Hughes of the Wolverines.
Moving to the ECAC, Boston University visits the University of Connecticut. Chad Krys is finally getting back into the lineup after an injury kept him out a few weeks. He did participate in the Bean Pot Tournament. Northeastern is at Vermont where Dylan Sikura and Ryan Shea will line up against Liam Coughlin of Vermont who has been red hot of late.
And lastly, the NCHC features two matchups that should be interesting. The first is Denver at Colorado College which I will be covering. This is the last two games between the two rivals this season and the winner of the series will win the Gold Pan Trophy. The teams tied both games in their first series. The last series to keep an eye on is North Dakota at Omaha. There is a lot of firepower in the series including forward Blackhawks prospect Fredrik Olofsson.
As the end of the Blackhawks season approaches, I will be putting out more draft previews of NCAA prospects so stay tuned.
I hope everybody has a great weekend!
