The Colorado Eagles have signed yet another goaltender in Adam Scheel to a one-year AHL contract. The 25-year-old netminder is coming out rough season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. he finished the year with a 13–18–8 record to go with his 2.84 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.
His past
Scheel spent three years at the University of North Dakota, where he would help lead the team in success through the NCHC Championship. During his college years, Scheel had a combined record of 52–18–5 with seven shutouts. His impressive 20–4–1 with a 1.74 GAA, .931 save percentage would lead UND to the Quarterfinal round of the 2021 Frozen Four, where he lost to Minnesota-Duluth in five overtimes. This would help Scheel secure his spot on the NCHC All-Star Team and the title of NCHC Goaltender of the Year.
Going pro
Coming out of college undrafted, Scheel was free to sign with any club he chose to. The Dallas Stars were his choice, and he would spend most of the year with their ECHL affiliate, the Idaho Steelheads. While in Idaho, he would secure the honor of Goaltender of the Week three times. His 1.97 GAA would be the best in the league and his .932 save percentage. Scheel’ success would run out in the Kelly Cup Finals as the Steelheads fell to the Florida Everblades (STL) four games to none.
Scheel spent the entirety of last season with the AHL Chicago Wolves. As the team struggled to put any momentum together, his numbers struggled as well. The Wolves did not have any affiliation with an NHL club, so they were completely on their own for the year to put a roster together. Chicago would finish last in the Central Division and have since signed an agreement with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Conclusion
Adam Scheel shows a lot of quickness in the crease. He is still learning the position at the pro level and has seen some success in the ECHL. Hopefully, this will carry over to the Utah Grizzlies and, when needed, the Eagles. But Colorado now has a goalie problem. They have two goalies on the roster that are on two-way contracts with Trent Miner and Kevin Mandolese. They also have two AHL contracts with Jake Barczewski and now Scheel. Healthy competition is not a bad thing, but overstock can be.
