Kero shines as Eagles score five unanswered in Calgary

The Colorado Eagles are coming in hot, winning a season high seven games in a row. But the battle was hard tonight as they rolled into Calgary against the Wranglers. The Eagles do not have a glorious history with Calgary. They have never won a game in the Scotiabank Saddledome until tonight. The Wranglers hold a 4-0 record this year against the Eagles, winning the last game 5–1. The Eagles would fall behind in the first by four goals, but prevailed with five unanswered goals. Colorado extended their win streak to eight games with the 5–4 comeback victory against Calgary.

— Turnovers killed the Eagles throughout the entire game. Turnovers led to two of Calgary’s goals in the first period and multiple chances throughout the game. Because of the turnovers, the Eagles could not clear the puck out of their own zone and made more work for the goalie.

— Throughout the game, the absence of Cal Burke in the lineup was noticeable to the team. Unfortunately, Burke is out with an upper-body injury after flying into the boards in the last game. — Tanner Kero was a man on a mission tonight scoring his first career AHL four point night. He broke open the scoring for the Eagles with an unassisted shorthanded goal in the second period. He later tipped in Brad Hunt’s pass to put Colorado down by only one goal and then added two assists to the mix.

— Ivan Provestov got off to a poor start, allowing four goals in the first period on 11 shots on goal. On most of the goals, there was not much he could have done, but you could tell it was just not his night. At the intermission, Trent Miner would come into the game and stop all 13 shots he faced. By holding the Eagles in the game, Miner’s performance showcased that he should be offered a new contract at the end of the year.

Conclusion

The Eagles showed grit and determination with tonight’s victory. Or as head coach Aaron Schneekloth would say, “they showed a lot of compete in their game.” For any team to fight back from four goals down, no matter the league, is impressive. Kero is hitting his stride in the season at the right time. He has had eight points in his last five games. With the win, Colorado maintains their position in second place in the Pacific Division with 19 games left. They will face off against the Calgary Wranglers again on Sunday at noon before heading to Bakersfield the following weekend.
