ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche have two things to look forward to this fall… the return of forward Logan O’Connor and the first season with defenseman Sean Behrens. O’Connor, who missed the last 25 games because of a hip injury, will be back to full health after surgery in the spring. Behrens will get to experience his first full season of professional hockey after winning two titles in three years with the University of Denver. Both players made it obvious that they are eager to get back to hockey this fall.
O’Connor and injury
Last season was the fewest games that O’Connor had played since his first year on the Avalanche. O’Connor and the team decided it was best to get the surgery and have the entire summer to heal. “I was skating mid-June,” he said, “so it gave me lots of runway before this season to sort of ramp it up and be feeling good come camp.” A lot of players begin skating in July, so he is already ahead of the game.
Roaring 20s
O’Connor hopes to be reunited on the “Roaring 20s,” line along with Miles Wood and Ross Colton, who he found instant chemistry with last year. “I would definitely like to if that’s the case,” O’Connor said. “I think with all of us, we’re comfortable playing with whoever, though, obviously at the start of the year a lot of things can change, and guys can be in and out, or coming back from injuries from last year or whatnot. So I think we’re comfortable with that. I think Bedsy knows he has that line to go to if need be. And if that’s the start of the season, great if it’s 10 or 20, games in. So be it. I think just see where things shake up and go from there. But I definitely enjoy playing with them.”
Cal Ritchie
O’Connor had the pleasure of skating at the DU Pro Camp last week with some other teammates like Behrens, Devon Toews, Samuel Girard, and the new NHL hopeful, Cal Ritchie. “He’s a really talented player,” O’Connor said. “He’s a lot more mature and bought in professionally than I’d say most guys his age are. I feel like he knows what he needs to do off the ice. Training wise, acting like a pro, recovery wise, nutrition wise, he’s bought into all those things, so that’s great to see. And then his talent level just shows through right away. He’s very skilled with good decision making, great release. So it’s been cool to watch him and sort of trying to help him out along the way.”
Behrens
Sean Behrens had a whirlwind end of the season last year. He won his second national championship, signed his first entry-level contract and reported to the Colorado Eagles all within a week. Behrens has his sights set on wearing an Avalanche sweater, not just an Eagles’ one. As in the way that he has approached this season, it hasn’t been much different from the past.” It’s been a lot the same,” Behrens said. “I think, even though it’s a new challenge and it’s a different opportunity. I think what I’ve done the last couple summers to get ready for the season with Matt Shaw and at DU has helped me a lot. And I think that helped me start off the season really well. So I think just kind of it’s been the same summer, and it’s just a different challenge coming up for the season now.”
Being mature enough
One thing that was very refreshing when speaking to Behrens was hearing how mature he was for a 21-year-old man. It seems like a lot of kids now want to rush their way into the pros where Behrens had the sense to know that he needed more time in college. The extra experience of 44 games helped him build up an already great game. “I think after my sophomore year I wasn’t really content with where my college career was at, so I thought that was a huge part of why I wanted to come back,” Behrens said. “And I think also, you look at it from a maturity standpoint, like this year, I took a lot of steps maturing, becoming a more rounded person off the ice with nutrition and habits and stuff like that. And I thought without this year I would have been a step behind at the next level in that area.”
Conclusion
Getting both Logan O’Connor and Sean Behrens back in the organization will inject the both teams with some much needed energy. The Avalanche have sorely missed O’Connor’s forechecking ability, along with his speed. Having another option for a puck moving defenseman with Behrens will open up a lot of options for the Eagles and hopefully the Avalanche. Both players have great hockey sense every fan cannot wait for them to come back.
