RECAP: Hawks’ 4–2 win in Anaheim completes winning road trip

The Chicago Blackhawks looked to finish their five-game road trip on a positive and earn their first two-game winning streak of the season when they visited “The Pond” in Anaheim on Sunday night to face the Anaheim Ducks. The Hawks were coming off a 4–3 comeback win in a shootout on Saturday in Los Angeles, as the Hawks trailed 2–0 after two periods and scored three in the third, including the equalizer with less than a minute remaining and the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker. Arvid Soderblom made his third start of the season on Sunday against Anaheim’s Lukas Dostal.

First period

The Blackhawks struck first when Isaak Phillips scored his first goal of the season and second of his career. Connor Bedard skated the puck into the Anaheim zone and fed a streaking Phillips, who snapped a shot from the right circle and over the glove of Dostal at 12:57 to give the Hawks a 1–0 lead.

Teuvo Teravainen made it 2–0 with his fourth of the season later in the frame. With the Hawks on the power play, Taylor Hall skated the puck into the right circle and fed Teravainen for a one-timer from the left faceoff dot at the 16:44 mark.

The Hawks would take the two-goal lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.

Second period

After a mostly scoreless second period, Seth Jones lit the lamp on the power play with his second of the season. Jones one-timed a Bedard pass from the right circle at 18:05.

The Hawks led 3–0 after two periods.

Third period

The Ducks finally broke through when Brock McGinn scored his second of the season. The Ducks created a 2-on-1 in front of the Hawks’ net with Ross Johnston feeding McGinn for the goal. Soderblom thought he froze the puck but it trickled in under his pad and over the goal line at the 10:16 mark. The Hawks’ lead was cut to 3–1.

Ryan Donato scored his team-leading seventh of the season to give the Hawks a 4–1 lead. A scramble in front of the net resulted in Donato poking in the rebound at 17:43. On the goal, Bedard recorded his third assist of the game.

Mason McTavish added a power-play goal with four seconds remaining in the game. For McTavish, it was his first of the season, which made the final score 4–2.

Analysis

It was a strong ending to a five-game road trip where the Hawks won their last two to finish the trip at 3–2.
